Suggested Sounds For Amsterdam

Anybody that knows me knows I'm a fanatic in the true sense of the word, when it comes to music. My musical tastes run the full gamut: from traditional jazz, blues, and rock - to metal, bluegrass, reggae, funk, hip hop, electronica, trip hop, experimentation - to straight-up weirdness... I have traveled all over the world to see shows by the Allman Brothers Band, phish, the Grateful Dead, Janes Addiction and many others. The cd's listed below represent music I heard a lot of, in Amsterdam... Whether in coffeeshops, concert halls, clubs, and bars, or various hotel rooms and automobiles.

If I wasn't such an HTML rookie, I would've written descriptions of each of the 24 cd's listed below... But I had problems getting the tables to align evenly; and rather than have this page uglier than it already is, I decided to skip the descriptions. Sorry :-( If you hold your cursor over the cd cover you'll see a brief description, as long as you can read fast! I like to discuss music and get turned on to new sounds, so email me for questions or correspondence.

And remember the Frank Zappa quote: "Music is the best!"

Sublime was hugely under-rated. What a waste. This is an excellent cd - A superb hybrid of reggae, ska, hip hop, and punk.
Sublime
40oz to Freedom

Dreams of Freedom: Ambient Translations in Dub. Produced by Bill Laswell, this cd is comprised of very cool remixes of Bob Marley music fully authorized by the Bob Marley Estate
Bob Marley
Dreams of Freedom

Another UK artist. UK Psychedelic funk rock with quite a bit of reggae in the mix.
Finley Quaye
Maverick a Strike

Top shelf hip hop... The lyrics are sometimes hysterical, sometimes controversial, and always thought provoking. Includes a nice cover of No Woman No Cry.
Fugees
The Score

More hip hop... Good jams, lots of references to weed. Pharcyde has been sighted more than once at Grey Area.
The Pharcyde
Bizarre Ride II

A 2 cd anthology that chronicles the Beastie Boy's recorded career, with a few rarities and remixes thrown in. Nicely detailed booklet included too.
Beastie Boys
Sounds of Science

What the hell kind of crazy music is this? Metal, thrash, funk, experimental? A Bill Laswell production - Features Brain, Bootsy, Buckethead, Bernie Worrell and turntables.

Jazz is Dead
Laughing Water

Sco is a jazz guitarist by reputation, but he takes things way out, towards rock, on this cd. A couple different rhythm sections, including members of Sex Mob and Deep Banana Blackout. Wicked groove funk.
John Scofield
Bump

Nasty loud blues with one of the masters from Mississippi... Produced by Jon Spencer, who also plays on it.
RL Burnside
A Ass Pocket of Whiskey

The bass player and drummer from Sublime's post post-Bradley Nowell cd... Several guest vocalists, and good dub/reggae/ska music.
Long Beach Dub Allstars
Right Back

Their 7th release, and it just keeps getting better. If you're not hip to Panic, this is as good a cd as any to start with. Widespread Panic has toured Europe a couple times.
Widespread Panic

A good 90's Dead show, excellent recording, with Branford Marsalis sitting in...
Grateful Dead
