Amsterdam/Netherlands Travel Related Links

This is not meant to be the number one source for Amsterdam related links. I have tried to only link to sites that have good info about the Netherlands, and I test fairly regularly to make sure they all work. Although these are almost all links to Amsterdam-related sites, that doesn't necessarily mean it's weed-related. If you have suggestions on site's that should be listed here, then email me at jonathan@cannabismail.com

Recommended Travelguide Books

Get Lost: The Cool Guide to Amsterdam
Get Lost, The Cool Guide to Amsterdam - by Joe Pauker... The best Amsterdam cannabis-tourism book.

Roughguide - Holland
Roughguide - Amsterdam
The Roughguide is by far my favorite travelguide book series. I prefer them over Lonely Planet, Time Out, Lets Go, etc because I consider their info more realistic and up-to-date, and they have nice maps. Whether you choose the Roughguide to Amsterdam or Holland, you can't go wrong either way.

Culture Shock! Netherlands
Culture Shock! Netherlands - Not a lot of pictures in this book, but some good information in regards to understanding Dutch society, the Dutch view of themselves, and their customs and attitudes.

Music & Festivals

Timeout AmsterdamTimeout Amsterdam A decent online city guide in English, updated regularly.

Pollstar - Amsterdam Concert Listings Here is where you can get upcoming concert listings for Amsterdam.

irielion.com - The Dutch/Belgian Reggae Site the place for Netherlands/Belgium reggae tourist info.

North Sea
Jazz Festival
In Den Haag - One of the biggest and best Jazz Festivals in the world. This is the the 26th year, and it takes place July 13th 14th & 15th. There will be approximately 220 performances and workshops on 15 stages by some 160 bands. Some of the big names that will be there this year include George Duke, Chick Corea and Bobby McFerrin, the Brecker Brothers, Isaac Hayes, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Van Morrison, Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, George Benson, John McLaughlin and The Zawinul Syndicate, Pat Martino and Joe Lovano, and more!

Lowlands Festival Lowlands Festival is a yearly event that takes place in August, out in the boonies, a couple hours south of A'dam. It lasts 3 days, and is on the same scale as the Glastonbury Festival. Lots of live music, cinema, raves, etc. They actually build a town for the fest, complete with 9 stages, 7 campgrounds, restaurants, shops, and lots of vending. Besides music you can go to the movies, see a play, head over to the 24 hour pub, swim in the lake, send your SMS messages to a giant screen, etc. The website is very cool - just make sure you have a flash plug-in installed in your browser.

Suggested Sounds
For Amsterdam
I started putting together a list of cd's I have enjoyed immenseley during my time(s) spent in Amsterdam... Before I knew it, I had enough picks that I decided to put them on a separate page. If you're into good music, check it out :-)

Museums

TIP: If you're planning on visiting a number of museums, you should consider getting a Museumjaarkaart, or annual pass. The card will get you in free, or at a greatly reduced rate into most of the museums in the Netherlands. Plan ahead, and bring a passport sized photo... You can buy a Museumjaarkaart at any of the big museums.

Vincent Van Gogh The Van Gogh museum... Renovated in 1999.

Stedelijk
Museum
My favorite of the big museums in Amsterdam... This is where you'll find the most surrealist artwork. I've seen stuff by Dali, Chagall, and Picasso here.

www.rembrandthuis.nl The Rembrandt House - Rembrandt actually lived in this house from 1949 - 1960. The house has recently been restored, and many of Rembrandt's most famous works were created here... Although it is a large collection, you'll have to go to Rijksmuseum to see The Nightwatch, perhaps his most famous piece.

Rijksmuseum The Treasure-House of the Netherlands - Many masterpieces here, including some very nice Vermeers.

Erotic Museum The Erotic Museum is located in the Red Light District... Take a wild guess what this museum is about.

Electric Ladyland Electric Ladyland: The first museum of fluorescent art. This looks really cool. I haven't checked it out yet, but its on the top of my list for my next trip to the promised land.

Other Online Coffeeshop Guides

www.angelfire.com/scifi2/jon/ is NOT competing with other Coffeeshop Websites... The more the merrier. Here are some links to other Coffeeshop pages on the web.
